GET INVOLVED IN THE MARKET HOTEL PROJECT!
ANNOUNCING – a new initiative to create a sustainable, all-ages, open-to-the-community, 7-nights-a-week home for independent music and art, in the Market Hotel space. Market Hotel has existed for over two years and in that time has hosted countless legendary events and drawn huge international notice… all of this under the constraints of operating completely underground and with no budget. Now the time has come to channel that momentum and create a fully realized space that serves the whole community, that will help define the NYC / Brooklyn scene into the future.
MARKET HOTEL PROJECT is a new not-for-profit organization dedicated to swiftly reopening and improving the Market Hotel space, by making the venue more viable, comfortable, safe, and better able to weather legal attention. Especially in these days of ever-encroaching commercialism and corporatism in “indie rock,” we envision a space that is a non-commercial spiritual home for independent rock music and independent art – but also is sustainable and sanctioned enough to expand the horizons of independent-minded tastes, and open our doors to music and art from the rest of our diverse Bushwick community.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS:
– All of the five summonses issued in relation to Market Hotel on 4/3/2010 have been dismissed.
– http://forum.markethotel.org has been launched to provide a forum for volunteers to discuss ideas and propose new directions for the Market Hotel Project
– Paperwork has been filed with the State of New York to establish Market Hotel Project as a limited liability corporation. The next step in this process is to apply with the IRS to become a full-fledged 501 (c)(3) non-profit. While we await that process, Market Hotel Project has been offered fiscal sponsorship by the Fractured Atlas organization.
– An application has been submitted for a “Letter of No Objection” from the New York City Department of Buildings for the Market Hotel building, which states that our current use is consistent with historic use of the building. This document is the first step toward legal occupancy and towards fulfilling requirements to obtain a license from the State Liquor Control Commission to sell beer and wine, among several other licenses. The next steps in the architectural / code compliance process are architectural renderings and plans submissions towards beginning building upgrades and obtaining a “Place of Assembly” permit.
– Market Hotel Project’s first grant proposal application has been submitted for The Metlife Foundation / Ford Foundation / LINC jointly offered “Space for Change: Building Communities Through Innovative Art Spaces” grant. This grant application was submitted in conjunction with Showpaper. The next step in the grant writing process is to fine tune the language we drafted for this application, and apply for more grants!
